Why Your Towels Smell Musty (And How to Fix It)

A towel that smells sour straight out of the wash isn’t actually clean — that musty smell is bacteria and mildew that survived the cycle, and it’ll come right back the next time the towel gets damp.

The basics

• Don’t overload the washer — towels need room to move for detergent to fully rinse out
• Skip the fabric softener — it coats fibres, traps moisture, and feeds the bacteria causing the smell
• Wash in hot water — towels can handle more heat than most fabrics, and heat kills odour-causing bacteria
• Dry completely — a damp towel left folded or bunched is exactly what mildew needs to grow

The real cause, most of the time

That sour smell almost always comes down to leftover moisture, not lack of soap. Towels are thick, and if they don’t dry all the way through — especially in a pile or folded while slightly damp — bacteria gets a head start before the next wash even happens.

The vinegar reset

If the smell keeps coming back no matter what, run one wash with just white vinegar (no detergent) on the hottest setting. It strips built-up residue and resets the fibres, then follow with a normal detergent wash.
