Static cling isn’t random — it’s caused by friction and dry air, which means it’s almost entirely preventable once you know what triggers it. No more shirts sticking to your jacket the second you walk outside.
The basics
- Don’t over-dry your clothes — static builds as fabric loses moisture, so pulling clothes out slightly damp helps
- Separate synthetics from cotton — polyester and cotton rub against each other and generate more static than similar fabrics washed together
- Use wool dryer balls — they reduce friction in the dryer without the chemical coating of dryer sheets
- Lower the heat setting — high heat speeds up moisture loss, which is the root cause of static

Why dryer sheets work (and their downside)
Dryer sheets coat fabric with a thin layer that reduces friction and neutralizes static charge — effective, but that same coating builds up over time and can reduce absorbency in towels and moisture-wicking performance in activewear.
A quick fix for cling you already have
Rubbing a metal hanger along the inside of a clingy garment, or a quick pass with a dryer sheet, discharges the static almost instantly if you’re already out the door.
