5 Laundry Day Tips That’ll Save You Time (and Your Clothes)

Laundry day doesn’t have to be a chore you dread. With a few small changes to your routine, you can save time, protect your favourite pieces, and get back to your day faster. Here are five simple tips our team swears by.

Five tips worth stealing

  1. Sort smarter, not harder Skip the “darks vs. lights” habit and sort by fabric weight instead. Heavy items like towels and jeans need a different wash cycle than delicate tees and activewear. Washing them together means one or the other comes out either under-cleaned or overworked.
  2. Cold water is your friend Most everyday loads don’t need hot water. Washing in cold saves energy, prevents shrinking, and helps your clothes hold their colour wash after wash. Save hot water for heavily soiled items or bedding.
  3. Don’t overload the machine It’s tempting to cram in one more load to save a trip, but overloading means clothes can’t move freely through the wash — so they come out less clean and more wrinkled. A good rule of thumb: you should be able to fit your hand between the clothes and the top of the drum.
  4. Treat stains before they set The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove. Keep a stain stick or spray on hand and treat spots as soon as they happen. If you can’t get to it right away, at least rinse the area with cold water to slow the stain from setting in.
  5. Let the pros handle the big stuff Comforters, delicates, and anything you’re worried about ruining are worth handing off. Skipping the guesswork (and the extra trip to the laundromat) means more time back in your day — and clothes that come back looking their best.

Where the time actually goes

For most households it isn’t the washing that eats the day — it’s the waiting, the second trip to move a load over, and the folding pile that sits on the couch until bedtime. Fixing the sorting and load size upstream removes the rewashing that quietly doubles all of it.
